When I made the claim for Pi P I was under the assumption any award would be backdated to the date of which the claim was made, however upon receiving my awarded I received a back payment from the 8th of December 2014 back to the 3rd of December 2014 when the decision to award the benefit was made.

The only exception to this is if you are in reciept of dla and are transitioning to pip. But you say you never claimed disability benefits before so you should get the backpay.
